Beat The Heat With These Cool Summer Drinks

We are in the middle of a heat wave and I do not like it. It’s hot and gross and there are only so many hours you can hang out in the grocery store before security starts following you around. Yes, I know I have been here every day for the past week for 8 hours straight and have only bought some bananas or grapes…. ok I haven’t done that, but lately, that’s all I’ve wanted to do.

So, let’s turn to plan B. We will cool ourselves with some refreshing drinks, and even though alcohol will dehydrate you, you can have some every now and then, just make sure to drink lots of water.

The first drink you don’t have to put in the vodka, it’s just as tasty without it. I would recommend you pulse some ice in a food processer to make it extra cold.

Watermelon and Lime Martini

I have a great martini recipe for you. If you don’t drink, skip the vodka as this is something you want to try . If you don’t have a juicer, just blend the watermelon and then strain it (or don’t, it just won’t be as smooth.)

Watermelon Martini

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1/4 of a large watermelon

1 lime

a shot of vodka or maybe two depending on the type of day you had 😉

Method:

  1. Wash the watermelon and lime before slicing.
  2. Cut your watermelon in half, then half the half, take of rind. Cut the fruit into piece that will easily fit into the juicer.
  3. Put watermelon pieces into fridge and let chill for 1/2 or so.
  4. Cut and peel the lime.
  5. On low speed, drop the watermelon in, then the lime, switch it to high.
  6. Add some ice and your vodka.
  7. Enjoy.

If you don’t have a juicer, then like I said just use a blender, but you need to juice the lime. You can get a cheap hand held citrus juicer at the dollar store, or an inexpensive power citrus juicer at a discount grocery store like Superstore, Walmart.

NOTE** If you put your watermelon in the fridge first you tend to get more juice. Fresh juice will still be good up to 72 hrs I heard, but it’s really the best very cold the day of making it or the next day.

If you are making this for a party, I would use 4-5 limes per whole watermelon.

Don’t skip the lime. The lime gives it a little something special. If you skip it, all you taste is watermelon and I personally didn’t like straight watermelon juice. I drank this juice all the time when I was rebooting, once I was done the reboot, I made this drink.

Yes, I know, it’s not in a martini glass, but this just saves me from having to get up a few seconds after making the first one, to pour another one 😉

There’s 3 levels to her juicing guides. Level 1- Basic Bitch, Level 2-Give it to me harder, Level 3- Baddest Bitch. Karliin acknowledges that one size doesn’t fit all- so go ahead you sexy Momma and play around, have fun.

From the time I opened the book and starting reading the titles, I knew anyone could go on a cleanse or start juicing even if it’s only a juice a day. With the names like blue balls, shake your peaches, I have a heart on, Kale the pain away and so on who couldn’t have fun? Not only is this book amusing- but it’s full of nutrients that you wouldn’t be able to just eat. No one eats 1/2 a large watermelon and lime in one sitting, but one can easily drink it, even if they didn’t add vodka 😉

Karliin has Beverages, Tonics/elixirs etc, Mylks, Smoothies and Shakes, Lunch and Dinner, Snaxx and treats for you to feast on. I’m going to share one of my favorite juices with you. Ok it’s really a smoothie (if you have a juicer I recommend you try juicing it as well). The lime takes the watermelon to the next level. They are perfect lovers, don’t try to separate them. The watermelon will taste like tears. Seriously.

Watermelon Mojito*

What can be better? This drink is easy, almost a little too easy. But don’t get suspicious…. It’s easy because it includes the best ingredients that momma nature has to offer.

1-2 servings

4 cups watermelon, frozen will give you a creamier texture

8 fresh mint leaves

1 lime juiced.

Blend all ingredients together until smooth and delicious. If using fresh watermelon, pulse in a handful of ice at the very end to ensure ultimate refresh-ability.

Gardein Beefless Ground

Brandie gifted me a coupon for a free Gardein product, something I have never tried before.  I got a package of Beefless Ground and found a winner first time round!  I forgot to take a pic of the front/back of the package so please have a look here for all the info:  https://gardein.com/products/gluten-free-beefless-ground/

The Beefless Ground sauteeing in a pan could fool any meat lover.  The meatless ‘hamburger helper’ (my own concoction) tastes way better than it looks in that pic.  If I had peas I would have added them.  I am glad I was given that coupon to try a Gardein product because I can see making several dishes from that one bag…ie sloppy joes, chili, nachos, tacos, meatless ‘hamburger helper (above) pasta w/meatless sauce, etc…awesome if you are on a tight budget and need to stretch out your meals.

Btw…a gentleman was standing in front of me taking some Gardein products….and, by some, I mean he took at least 3 bags of almost every Gardein product that was in the cooler at my Walmart….I kinda went, ‘hmm’….Now I know why he was purchasing so many Lol.

Most of the recipes in the book are gluten free. Actually at first I thought it was a GF book because it wasn’t until several recipes into it that I actually found one that had gluten it in. Jason does list a lot more TOP foods in each chapter, I was only mentioning three. But as you can see- real foods will improve your over all wellness. Including a better sex life.

With permission from Hay House Publishing, I’m able to share a recipe with you. It’s called Nacho Cheesy Popcorn. This is from the Chapter Recipes for Weight Loss.

2 tablespoons grapeseed oil

¾ unpopped popcorn seeds

¼ cup melted organic virgin coconut oil

¼ nutritional yeast

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon sea salt.

 

  1. Heat the grapeseed oil in large saucepan over medium high heat. Add the popcorn seed and place the lid on the lid on pan. Shake vigorously to coat the kernels with oil. When the corn starts to pop, shake the pan constantly until the popping stops, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and pour the popped corn into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Drizzle the melted coconut oil over the hot popcorn and sprinkle with the nutritional yeast, chili powder, cumin garlic powder and sea salt. Stir thoroughly and serve immediately.

I didn’t use his method of popping the corn I used my air popper. Therefore I didn’t use the grapeseed oil. OMG!!! I loved it. Actually I had this for supper one night. Yes, you can have popcorn for dinner- try it sometime. Plus I scored bonus points for being a cool Mom. Sometimes I make my kids popcorn for breakfast- and this is a non guilty pleasure. If your kids are not a fan of spice, omit the chili powder- it will still be awesome.
